VK Industrial IoT FAQ
GPS Tracking Basics
What is vehicle GPS tracking?
In today's technologically advanced world, GPS tracking technology stands at the forefront of managing and monitoring vehicle movements. This comprehensive guide simplifies and expands upon the intricate data flow and operational mechanisms of GPS trackers, tailored for both general understanding and to highlight the exceptional capabilities of our system. The information provided here not only explains the process but also underlines the security considerations and summarizes the value addition of utilizing such sophisticated tracking solutions.
While tracking devices are similar to in-car navigation systems, there are a few key differences.
In car navigation systems show drivers their location on a digital map and then provide driving instructions to get to a designated point using real-time directions.
On the other hand, GPS trackers use GPS technology to track a vehicle’s current location and trip history and not designed for navigational instructions. The GPS data is then broadcasted to back office systems for processing.
Overview:
The data flow of GPS coordinates from a vehicle GPS tracker to a back-office management console hosted on the internet involves several key steps and components. Here's a breakdown of the typical data flow, considering that your vehicle tracker is equipped with a SIM card
Detailed Data Flow:
- GPS Signal Reception:
- The GPS tracker in the vehicle connect to a series of satellites to receives signals from a constellation of GPS satellites orbiting the Earth called the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) which send microwave signals to the receiver i.e. the vehicle tracker.
- The tracker uses a process called trilateration which uses the position of three or more satellites from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network and its distance from them to determine latitude, longitude, elevation, and time and the velocity of travel.
- The Global Positioning System, or GPS, is powered by a global radio navigation system made up of a minimum of 24 operational satellites that continually orbit Earth. All GPS trackers rely on the same data from this satellite network to track and calculate a vehicle’s location.
- Data Collection and Processing:
- The GPS device i.e. Vehicle Tracker which typically includes a microprocessor that processes the raw GPS data to derive meaningful location information calculates its distance from the satellites in real time.
- This information can also include speed, direction of travel, and time stamps among other data points.
- The device stores the information and then forwards the data to a backend server, generally today a cloud based server via an installed SIM card.
- Data Transmission via Cellular Network:
- The GPS tracker uses its installed SIM card to connect to a wireless or cellular network (like GSM). This connection enables the device to transmit the collected data over the Internet.
- The tracker establishes a connection with the cellular network and sends the location data through this network. It usually uses GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) or 3G/4G LTE channels to send this data.
- Internet Transfer:
- The data sent by the GPS tracker is routed through the internet infrastructure (via cellular data networks) to reach a designated server or cloud service. This is typically facilitated by TCP/IP protocols.
- Server Reception:
- The incoming data is received by your servers or a cloud-hosted platform that is part of your back-office system. This system can either be owned by your organization or hosted by a third-party service provider.
- This server is responsible for processing and storing the data received from multiple GPS trackers.
- Our GPS servers allow a small number of our staff to access reports in real-time.
- Data Processing and Management:
- The back-office server processes this received data, which may include filtering, analysis, and sorting of location data based on time, vehicle, etc.
- This processed information is then stored in databases managed by your back-office system.
- Data Availability and Visualization:
- Your back-office management console accesses this processed data, typically through a web-based interface, allowing you and other authorized personnel to view and manage the location information.
- You may view maps, generate reports, track vehicle movements in real-time, and conduct further analyses.
- Tracking a vehicle with GPS provides real-time or historic navigation data no matter the journey. Even if the satellite signals get blocked, the GPS tracker can use cell tower signals to estimate the vehicle’s location instead.
- End User Interaction:
- Finally, via your management console, you can interact with the data — track vehicles, schedule maintenance, or dispatch services based on the real-time insights gained from the GPS tracking information.
- Although we partner with law enforcement they never have direct access to our database of users or user data that you do not agree for them to have access to. Law enforcement is only sent a link to a carjacked or stolen vehicle upon your request. From our GPs server the only data that law enforcement receives is the friendly name of the tracked vehicle and a real-time tracking link sent to their computer, smartphone or tablet over https a secure web protocol
- Power Considerations:
- In the vehicle, the tracker can be powered a number of ways Ex: the onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) connector, hard wired into your vehicle wiring harness, cigarette lighter, accessory socket, or an internal battery. Each of these connectivity options comes with different cost considerations. We will not outline to you in this post what method of connectivity we use to power our tracker. What we will say is that our tracker can be powered by any model vehicle without significant cost considerations and limited complexity.
- Cost Considerations:
- Passive trackers are usually less expensive than active ones as they simply store the GPS data to be viewed at a later time. These types of vehicle trackers are not suitable for tracking vehicles in a carjacking situation when real-time tracking is required. Our tracking intervals are among "The Best" top 1% in the vehicle tracking industry as I have not found a competitor that sends updates every 10 seconds. Many of our competitors claim updates at minimum every 2 minutes. Once again when tracking a carjacker 2 minutes is not suitable for tracking the bad guy. We bit the bullet and prioritized you and every 10 seconds an update is sent to law enforcement. I can see a vehicle 10 seconds in front of me and allows law enforcement to be strategic in its apprehension of the criminal, but only because of our aggressive tracking settings. do your homework and get back with us if you find a solution that tracks more frequently that us.
Security Considerations
- Data transmitted over the internet should be encrypted to protect sensitive information from interception.
- The management console should be secured with appropriate authentication and authorization mechanisms to ensure only authorized personnel have access to the GPS tracking data.
In summary, the data flow involves capturing GPS data, processing it, transmitting it via cellular and internet networks to a server, and then making it available on your management console for various operational uses. Each step should be monitored and maintained to ensure accuracy and security of data.
How accurate is vehicle GPS tracking?
Our general purpose GPS tracking device has a CEP rating of < 2.5 meters (8.2 ft). So in layman's terms, our GPS device is expected to provide accurate position within 2.5 meters (8.2ft) or less of the actual location for at least 50% of the measurements.
GPS tracking device accuracy can vary depending on several factors (Atmospheric conditions, Satellite geometry, Signal blockage,Device design, GPS antenna, Device installation location)
Does your vehicle GPS tracking work globally?
Our trackers are certified for North America and approved by the FCC, PTCRB, IC, and AT&T, ensuring compliance with key regulatory standards across the region. If you require a different solution, please contact us direct for you custom solution(s).
Does your vehicle GPS tracker need a SIM card?
Our lines of vehicle trackers all come with a SIM card. A SIM card is essential in a vehicle tracker because it allows the device to connect to a cellular network, enabling it to transmit the vehicle's location data in real-time to our monitoring platform, providing continuous tracking capabilities without needing to physically retrieve the data from the tracker itself; essentially, the SIM card acts as the communication gateway for sending location updates over the mobile network.
Installation & Setup
How to install a vehicle tracker?
At this time, Q4 2024, custom installation of our tracker(s) is required. For public safety reasons we will never describe our installation processes. There are literally thousands of makes and models of vehicle trackers and a myriad ways to install the trackers depending on the make and model of the vehicle in question.
Is a subscription required for your service?
Is a subscription required for your service?
There are some components of our our solution that require a annual subscription and that is our platforming fees which we are only passing along our cost to our customer. After year one, i.e. years two and three we pass along a $36 fee per year. So effectively on a subscription basis, over three years you subscription fees are only $72. We cover this subscription $36 fee the first year as a discount for purchasing our solution for a three year period. We expect that our three year plan will retail at $425.00. This initial price will cover the physical tracker and three years of SIM cellular coverage. Because of the short time span of electronics and the ever evolving nature of technology, we will let you know how to update your technology at that time. We are ever evolving our technology and would never want you to be out of touch with the latest threats. We expect that you will be contacted 12 months prior to the end of year three (3) to discuss your technology options. There are conditions in the tech space where manufactures put end of life dates on technology and we adhere closely to discontinuing the use of these end of life products, another reason why we generally limit our solutions to a three year at a time life span. You will never be left with obsolete equipment in your car, like when millions upon millions of vehicles were left with non operational 3G modems in them and were useless to law enforcement in the ability to track vehicles.
Are there any vehicle model restrictions for installation?
All we need is a 12v power source to supply our vehicle tracker with the necessary power to perform its basic functions.
Will installation affect my vehicle's warranty?
Our installations do not impact any vehicle warranties based on our cutting edge solutions. This no only reduces your risks and allows us to perform installations with zero liability for anything that may go wrong with your vehicle. As a start-up we had to find ways to scale our business with minimal liability for long term success and we have cracked that nut leaving other installed solutions costing more than than ours. The effective cost of our solution is 39 cents per day when you purchase our solution at $425.00.
Tracking & Features
Is real-time vehicle tracking available?
Realtime tracking is available and is the only type of vehicle tracking solutions we offer. More importantly our real time vehicle tracking platform outperforms many of the tracking platforms on the market. I would put our real time tracking in the top 1% because our trackers record position every 10 seconds. The closest competitor has documented that they recode position every 20 seconds. As a startup we have to bring you the very best most high tech solution. Our team sees it as doubtful that there are many cost effective solutions that will provide you a more real time tracking at an affordable price (second by second tracking is seen as overkill for our use cases). Using our solution if law enforcement is tracking a vehicle that is 10 seconds ahead of the reported position, it is reasonable that the tracked vehicle is within eye sight. Additionally if law enforcement is attempting to set a trap for a vehicle it is better to have data that is 10 seconds old versus something that is almost 1\2 minute old. Our real-time tracking data is more actionable and we are experimenting with sending real-time commands so that if Law Enforcement required better signal, we can send over the air commands to reconfigure the device to provide second by second tracking for a limited time and send additional commands to return the device to it's normal operating reporting intervals.
How does geofencing work?
Geofencing is a virtual boundary around your location no matter how big. Once this virtual boundary is in place for your location. We program our systems so that whenever your vehicle exits this virtual boundary our backend systems send an email, a Slack alert to our customers. We have found no other consumer solution providing such granular vehicle alerting services to it's customers. We soon hope to be able to send an messages via SMS to customer(s) letting them know that the geofence has been violated and that you should check the status of your vehicle.
Todays' version of our email and slack alerts take the following format:
"The vehicle 6478420-Ford Fusion-DM13A has exited the G-Mary Collins geofence"
Breaking this geofence message down in a mock example so that we can make it more understandable (hyphens will separate user unique parts of the message).
6478420 = License Plate Number,
Ford Fusion = Make Model
DM13A = Unique tracker identifier used for internal purposes,
G-Mary Collins = Descriptive name given to the geofence by the customer and that makes sense to our customer (this will be unique for each customer)
We have two (2) additional experimental geofencing technologies that we want to deploy, one in the real-time geofencing space and the other in the hardware based geofencing space. By sticking with a leader, like us, that is always thinking outside of the box you are guaranteed that you will be protected by the latest solutions in the vehicle tracking space. Once we have validated these experimental features, we often look to implement these at no or low cost to our customers that have purchased our solution(s) at the full price of $425 or what ever the prevailing full price was at the time of purchase. Any purchases at the discounted price may be upgraded to these features at a nominal cost.
What theft prevention features are available?
At this time we do not offer theft prevention solutions to our consumer accounts. Our standard trackers have the capability to perform any and all functions used in commercial fleet operations because our trackers are commercial vehicle trackers used in the consumer market. To prevent theft with our units we would have to connect our custom harness to the wiring in your vehicle. As stated in our faq, we are not interested in incurring this level of liability and you are not interested in voiding youe vehicle's warranty. Our vehicle trackers have the capability to perform theft prevention functions but we do not offer that to our non-commercial accounts. If there are any commercial accounts that want this type of offering please contact us directly.
How fast are movement alerts?
We have found that our geofence alerts in our testing, generally send alerts when the vehicle is 500 feet away from the boundary of the geofence.
Ex: Once my vehicle is started and I exit the garage and get to the other end of my street my OBD tracker alerts are received. We are not offering OBD trackers at our standard price of $425, but is is being used as the standard to test all other trackers against. In many instances our offered tracker can alert less than 1 minute or more after the OBD tracker. There are reasons for this delayed. 1) The OBD tracker is always powered on 24x7x365 as it is always drawing a small power load from the vehicle so that is basically no bootup time involved in sending location data to our back end systems and resulting geofence alerts. The tracker we offer has a boot up interval of about 30-40 seconds. Once booted up the tracker has to secure a lock on 3-4 satellites in order to begin sending useful location data. I have noticed that in Chicago many of my alerts are received in less time that my specific testing location in Evanston, IL. At this time we have not done extensive research that would explain this difference in geofence alerting. Although we have noticed delayed alerts at the Evanston location, this is not the case 100% of the time, it is something that has caught our attention. As noted in one of our other faq responses, we discuss the factors that could impact signal which is something that may be in play during some of our observations at the Evanston location.
What power source is used for the tracker?
All we can tell you is that our trackers need a 12 volt power source.
Can the tracker endure extreme weather?
Our trackers are manufactured rated from -4 degrees to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
Emergency features available?
The emergency notification features we have can be implemented in most smart devices. To keep our customers safe, we will not share publicly our emergency notification solutions.
We have a couple of additional emergency solutions are a newly under development so that criminals can be visually identified, resulting in a more solid conviction of the criminal during the prosecution process.
Technical Issues & Support
What to do when the tracker location is inaccurate?
Unfortunately you will never know directly via an app if your vehicle tracker is reporting inaccurate location data. The reason why you will never know is because we intentionally designed our solution with the following considerations in mind.
Our systems are not designed to allow our customers to track the bad guys or your spouse, loved ones or children. Our tracking platform will only send tracking data to law enforcement to act upon baseon on one our covered criminal activities. Additionally we do not want to incur any liability if you were to track your vehicle and were harmed in the act of self initiated vehicle recovery. Additionally we specifically want to make sure that our customers could not invade the privacy of others if our solutions were not used as intended.
How we prevent these self initiated recovery or tracking spouses and the like is that every tracking request i.e. "event" is accompanied with a quasi police report sent to law enforcement on your behalf virtually signed by you as being a legitimate request for vehicle location. Remember our solution is only for stolen vehicle recovery in a vehicle theft or carjacking event. In our documentation and agreements, you have agreed to the automated police report generation and submission on your behalf. In the Chicagoland area the penalty for the submission of a false police report is as follows:
Filing a false police report is classified as a Class 4 felony in Illinois.
A conviction for this offense can result in:
Imprisonment: A sentence ranging from 1 to 3 years in state prison.
Fines: Fines of up to $25,000.
Other Consequences:
Criminal Record: A permanent mark that can impact future employment, housing, educational opportunities, and more.
Professional Impact: Working in certain professions the consequences may include the loss of licensure.
Personal Impact: The stigma of a conviction can affect personal relationships and your standing in the community.
Definitions:
Knowingly False Information: The defendant must have knowingly provided false information to law enforcement.
Intent to Mislead: The false report must have been made with the intent to mislead law enforcement or initiate a false investigation.
Law Enforcement: The false report must be made to a police officer or another official responsible for enforcing the law.
If during an event we learn about the trackers inability to provide accurate tracking data you will replace the vehicle tracker if it has found to be defective and not as a result of damage to the tracker.
How to check if the GPS tracker is working?
One way to check if your vehicle tracker is working properly is to set up a geofence notification. When you leave the designated location you should get a notification within under 2 minutes. Note: Notification alerts are dependent on a variety of external factors that outside of our direct control.
Steps when the tracker is malfunctioning?
Contact our support team via submitting a ticket. If your tracker is actually found to be malfunctioning we will take corrective action based on the specific circumstances. The remedy will include troubleshooting steps leading up to and including unit replacement.
Tracker software update frequency?
We will update our vehicle trackers with firmware updates based on the nature of the updates. At this time there is no schedule upon which firmware updates from the manufacturer are released. As it relates to our internally developed tracker updates, we do not have a schedule for these either. We will perform updates based on our internal requirements on an as needed basis. Tracker updates we may perform fall into two broad categories A) Performance settings B) Security settings
Data & Integration
How secure is my tracking data?
Understanding what data is transmitted and over which networks is vitally important to understand data security.
1) GPS data sent to our platform from the vehicle tracker only includes time stamped data, longititude and latititude and possibly other non personal idnetifiable information for each recorded and sent to our back office systems.
2) On our vehicle tracking platform which is a cloud based platform only contains name, license plate number, vehicle make and model, customer defined geofence location(s).
Our CRM system is a mature CRM systems and is the repository where customer contact data resides.
Rest assured our CRM system participates in bug bounty programs using the BugCrowd platform. Services provided by BugCrowd include Bug Bounties, Penetration testing Attack Surface Management and Vulnerability Disclosure program. VKIIOT only partner with firms that take security serious.
Is multi-user access available?
Our solutions does not provide multi user access. We provide vehicle tracking for one person and for one vehicle.
How can GPS data improve my driving?
Our consumer vehicle tracking solution is not designed for monitoring and altering driving behavior in the consumer market. If this is a solution you are looking for talk to our commercial team about your business requirements.
Data storage duration and access?
We use many cloud based services. We pen test our cloud based services and have automated monitoring of each service so that the management team is aware of all data accesses. We store data as long as is required by law or as long as required by business operations.
